In my decades of working within the security industry, specifically alongside central stations, I’ve seen firsthand that the relationship between a dealer and their monitoring center is one of the most important factors in long-term success.
For a dealer, your central station isn’t just a service provider; they are the voice of your company when things go wrong. If you are looking to partner with a new station or considering a move from your current one, here are the non-negotiable features you should look for.
1. The Gold Standards: UL Listing and Five Diamond Certification
First things first: never settle for a station that isn’t UL Listed. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) ensures the facility meets strict requirements for structural integrity, backup power, and redundant communication paths.
Beyond that, look for The Monitoring Association (TMA) Five Diamond designation. This signifies a commitment to random inspections and, more importantly, that 100% of their operators have achieved a high level of proficiency and ongoing education. For security, "good enough" isn't enough.
2. Redundancy and Reliability
When a disaster hits—be it a hurricane or a massive fiber cut—your customers expect their signals to go through. Ask potential partners if they have multiple sites in different parts of the country? If one goes down, the transition should be seamless, with no impact on response times.
3. Culture and Customer Service
This is where my years in the industry have taught me to look closest. You need a partner that treats your customers like their own.
- Response Times: What are their average "live" answer times?
- Dealer Support: Do they have a dedicated dealer relations team?
- The "Human" Factor: When you call their office, do you feel like a number or a partner? A central station with a high employee retention rate usually translates to better, more experienced service for your subscribers.
4. Technology and Integration
The security landscape is changing fast. Your central station must support the latest in video verification, IoT integrations, and mobile dealer tools. If they aren’t investing in the latest software platforms, they are holding your business back from modern revenue streams.
5. Transition Ease
If you are changing stations, the technical "migration" can be a headache. An expert central station should have a proven process for onboarding new dealers, including data conversion and testing, to ensure your customers don't experience a minute of downtime.
Final Thoughts
Choosing a central station is a "marathon" decision, not a sprint. Look for a partner that balances high-tech capabilities with high-touch service.
In my following blog, I will discuss whether the central station is offering the new technologies that are available so you can take advantage of new services and increased RMR.
